:: RINGS ::
In most cultures the hands are regarded as the most unique, capable and sacred part of the body, they possess the ability to heal, nurture and create but also of destructive acts.
Most societies consider the hand to be a symbol of authority, power and nobility, particularly the right hand. The act of shaking hands constituted a binding legal agreement throughout the old world. This custom still holds true in some societies and professions to this day. In ancient times and among illiterate people stamping one’s handprint or thumbprint on a document deemed to be a valid and binding signature.
The origin of rings is not precisely known. Initially they were made of grass, animal skin and bone, rocks and base metals. With time the trend became to use more expensive and precious materials in the creation of rings. It is believed that the custom of wearing a ring as an amulet for protection originated in the custom among primitive people of using a knotted wire or cord as a protective spell against enemies or evil. The knot represented the eternal bond between the object, the spell and the wearer. This symbol was later transferred onto rings, which its circular shape was considered to be a powerful symbol of eternity among primitive people. The combination of the two symbols, the knot and the circle were thought to be even more powerful together as amulets of protection.
Among the first rings to have been used for purposes other than that of protection were Signet rings and devotion rings. In ancient Egypt and Greece devotion rings were worn as a symbol of loyalty, unity and attachment. With the early formation of the Christian church rings gained even more popularity, as they became symbols of dignity, nobility and rank among the higher echelon of the church specifically by the Pope, Cardinals and Bishops.
A ring has long been universally adopted as the symbol for long-lasting love and marriage. As such it became an important ceremonial object of the wedding ritual. Originally wedding rings were plain, unbroken and smooth bands of gold. In ancient Rome it was believed that a vein called Vena Amoris runs through the third finger of the left hand and connects to the Heart for that reason the wedding ring was worn on that finger. In the Middle Ages there was confusion as to which hand the vein actually runs through. It was then thought that it may actually run through the third finger of the right hand and the placement of the wedding ring changed to the right hand. It was only with the introduction of the Book of Common Prayer in the mid 16th century, which declared that a wedding ring should be worn on the left hand that the custom was changed back. By the mid 17th century thumb rings became fashionable and the custom of placing the wedding ring changed yet again. It became fashionable to place the wedding ring on the third finger of the left hand during the ceremony but after it was over the ring was moved to any other finger of choice mainly to the thumb. The placement of a wedding ring differs from culture to culture. In a Jewish wedding ceremony it is customary to place the wedding ring on the right index finger, since it is associated with intelligence. Once the ceremony is over the Jewish bride usually moves the ring to the fourth finger of the right hand. There are however Orthodox Christians in Europe that also wear their wedding rings on the right hand, because the Church considers the right hand to be a symbol of virtue, power and authority.
With time rings became more than just a symbol of nobility, marriage or love. They are among the most popular objects of adornment in every culture. Depending greatly on the materials from which they are made and the symbols they contain, rings continue to be used as important amulets and talismans of protection and power.
It is presumably because of her proximity to the heart and her energetic qualities that the left hand is said to represents the feminine aspects of one’s constitution and the healing and nurturing abilities humans posses. Because of the fact that there are more nerve endings in the hands than in any other part of the body, the way we use them and what we choose to adorn them with, is of great importance.

:: EARRINGS ::
The ear is considered to be the mirror reflection of the entire body. The practice of treating various ailments within the body through stimulation of different ear acupuncture points was wide spread in ancient China, Greece, Egypt and Rome. In 1957 a French physician, Dr. Nogier developed an ear chart in the form of an inverted fetus superimposed on the ear, which mapped treatment acupuncture points for all parts and organs of the body. Since that time the popularity of acupuncture spread throughout the entire world, accepted and used as a powerful and valid healing tool and modality.
Ancient people such as the Egyptians adopted a custom of wearing earrings from Chinese merchants they traded with. The belief grew that a point in the center of the earlobe corresponds to the Third Eye on one’s head and to intuitive powers. Furthermore it was believed that one’s intuitive power and ability could be boosted by wearing pierced earrings and by pulling on them especially in those points on the ear.
In most ancient cultures earrings were worn as protective amulets against evil. Pagans wore earring as a representation of the moon and the serpent. Among some ancient tribes ear piercing was a symbol of status and upper social ranking while among other cultures wearing an earring or nose ring was considered to be a symbol of slavery and was forbidden.
The first to wear earrings were men, but in the 18th century the church forbid their use by men at which time they became popular objects of adornment for women. Today both women and men wear earrings although in some conservative companies and professions men who wear earrings are still frowned upon or the practice is discouraged at best.
The symbolic meaning of the ear is continuously changing and evolving with time. Some of the ear’s symbolic associations are: the sacred pathway to spirituality, awareness and attentiveness to the needs of others and the womb.
